Smart Water Metering
Smart water metering is the use of internet-capable devices to measure water consumption and provide detailed minute-by-minute statistics to water users and utilities. In April 2015, I gave a public presentation on smart water metering's benefits and downsides at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Water management is of utmost importance for today’s planners in all regions of the world. The combined forces of rapid urbanization and increasing populations will create huge increases in water demand. Meanwhile, climate change and climate variability will decrease water supply in many regions and introduce water supply vulnerability everywhere.
The solutions that cities consider to balance water demand with supply must take into account the supply limitations, greater uncertainty, and risks that climate change creates. The smart cities paradigm holds that city planners can reduce water demand, increase infrastructure efficiency, and reduce services uncertainty through the implementation of technological solutions that draw from localized intelligence.
